Weather problem
How to stay cool on the metro but warm outside in winter
The classic winter big-city pain: −10° outside, +25° on the metro. Dress for the cold and you sweat; dress for indoors and you freeze. The fix is layers you can pull off and carry.
Solution
What to do
- 01
Base layer wicks sweat: merino or synthetic. Avoid cotton — it traps sweat against the skin.
- 02
Mid-layer needs to come off fast — zip-up sweater, fleece, cardigan.
- 03
Outer layer should vent: a zipped puffer breathes better than a pullover coat.
- 04
Take the hat and scarf off the moment you’re on the train. Your head dumps up to 30% of body heat.
- 05
Bag matters: it must hold your hat, gloves, and mid-layer at once.
